A perfusionist is a professional who makes sure that your heart and lungs are in good cardiovascular health.  These professionals are there to make sure that your in good working order and they are there in times of an emergency when heart or lung failure may occur. These people will help doctors and surgeons save a patients life when a crisis happens.  You will find that a perfusionist will be found in the operating room with doctors and surgeons all over the world, especially during open heart surgeries. They will use sophisticated machines, along with their knowledge of the cardiovascular system and help to ensure that the lungs and heart are operating at the level they should be, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are stable and the procedure and patient are moving along well.  In this article I will discuss a perfusionsist salary along with their job description and all the ins and outs of what a perfusionist does on a daily basis. 

Job Description

A perfusionist works with surgeons, doctors and anesthesiologist to help the heart and lungs maintain a healthy level while they perform a open heart surgery, orthopedic and vascular surgery along with many more.  A perfusionist is detrimental while in the operation room. These people have been trained to know all of the ins and outs of a persons cardiovascular system.  They will use the skills and information that they have acquired in their years of experience and use it to ensure that a patients life is kept safe and secure.  During the procedure a perfusionist will be in the operating room with their equipment monitoring heart, lung and oxygen levels.  They will be checking for vital signs, blood flow levels and much more. A perfusionist will step in and make adjustments to devices during the operation to help with increased or decreased blood circulation to help the patient during the surgery as well as after. 

A perfusionist must be able to have excellent communication skills.  They must be able to make decisions quickly and accurately, they must be able to express themselves in a multitude of different scenarios.  A perfusionist must also be able to be extremely knowledgeable about a heart, know everything there is to know about defibrillators, pacemakers and much more. A perfusionist must be able to handle high stress situations and be able to endure long and complicated surgeries.  Along with communicating well a perfusionist must also be able to work well with others, have exceptional bed side manner and communicate with tons of different people at all times. 

A perfusionist will be monitoring a patient the entire time during surgery.Another important characteristic for a perfusionist to have is being able to be emotionally stable, especially since he or she will find themselves in highly stressful situations most of the time.  They must be able to stay calm even when the environment around them may be extremely unstable.  Another important attribute is a perfusionist's ability to handle a fast paced environment where things may be great one minute and then in a split second something disastrous could happen.  A perfusionist will find that a typical work week is generally forty hours a week, but since the nature of their work will have them in surgeries no matter what time of day or night, they will find that they will normally be on call.  A perfusionist should also be aware that weekend and evenings are typically the times that they will find themselves working based upon the type of surgeries that they will be working on. 

Education

You will find that a perfusionist will go to college or graduate school for perfusion science.  A person going to school to become a perfusionist will find that they will learn how to operate a heart and lung machine. They will also learn how to use other technical devices as well and they will test out their skills on live animals.  While in school a perfusionist will learn all of the most up to date information there is to know about the world of cardiovascular health, surgery and the latest surgeries that are being done.  These students will also learn the latest trends, research methods that are being studied as well as being used that can help to save a person's life.  Once they graduate college or graduate school a perfusionist will then have to pass the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. This is a written exam with hundreds of questions that will be timed.  Once a student has passed this they will be licensed to work in whatever state they are in and may begin working.

Once a perfusionist has passed the boards and finds themselves licensed they will then be able to apply for jobs.  Recent data has shown that that the job outlook for perfusionists are quite good. Perfusionists jobs are in high demand right now and over the next five years they are said to have a twenty percent job hike. You will find that you can find a job anywhere in the world as a perfusionist.  These professionals will find themselves working with some of the best cardiologists and surgeons in the world.  A perfusionist salary is typically anywhere between seventy eight thousand to over a hundred thousand dollars a year.  A perfusionist is also available for yearly bonuses, raises, 401K and other perks.  One of the best cities for a perfusionist to earn the most money is found to be in New York City.  New York City starts a perfusionist out at a hundred thousand a year whereas other cities will typically cap a perfusionist off at roughly around a hundred thousand a year.  A perfusionist will also be able to work in the academic settings on most colleges and universities, making well over a hundred thousand a year.  These jobs are in high demand as well for teaching, working with students in their clinicals and trials as well.
